Business Planning Begins With Some Hindsight

So how's business?
Within the next few months, many of you will begin your 4th quarter planning and end-of-year review for your business. It's been a tumultuous year, to be sure; yet, businesses are doing well in spite of the gloom and doom reported by the media.
One thing for certain is that we are experiencing change on many levels. As you reflect on this year's activity within your business, are you keeping abreast of the changes in technology, in the economy, and in the global marketplace? What new businesses have opened up in your area that might appeal to your current clientele? Do you know how many new customers you've gained this year - and how many "regulars" you've lost? How's the inventory looking? What are your reports telling you about what's hot on the shelves - and what's not?
It's easy to get bogged down in the daily minutiae when you are the primary mult-tasker in your own business. And it is critical to remember that, as the owner of your business you are also responsible for its direction, its profitability, its survival. Mark off some time on your calendar - go ahead, mark it right now. Set this time aside for review and planning. When will it be? How much time will you allow yourself? And where will you do this?
