Welcome to the Writer's Gym!
WRITER’S WORKOUT
Welcome to the Writer’s Gym! Everyone’s into fitness these days, and that’s a good thing. A healthy body strengthens the muscles, bones and organs. With all that oxygen pumping through you, you’ll find you have more energy, and hopefully, you’ll lose unwanted fat and pounds.
Whoa! This is all great for our “physical self,” but what about our “Creative Self” – that inner, creative spirit that wants to draw, paint, write, and play?
Well, it’s time to get that part of us into shape too. Since November is National Novel Writing Month, what a better reason to begin a workout program for writers. If you feel ready to tackle the ultimate marathon of writing a 50,000-word novel in 30 days – during the month of November – it’s not too late! You can still enter the contest at NaNoWriOrg. If, however, you want a less intense workout, then the Writer’s Gym is for you.
WELCOME
The Writer’s Gym is for those of us that want to flex a little muscle here and there, crack our knuckles, and get out the writing pens and pencils (or computer keyboards) and just get comfortable with writing again. Welcome!
There are 21 “work days” in the month of November . . . we’ll not count the weekends and Turkey Day . . . your “muscle” does need a break now and then. So, for the next 21 “work days,” (that’s Monday through Friday for you calendar junkies) come join me for a writer’s workout.
How will it work? It’s simple. It’ll be completely voluntary – you choose to show up at the gym or you don’t. My sole purpose is to get writers and wannabe writers excited about writing. Don’t worry if the writing doesn’t come out polished and perfect. No one I know creates a perfect first draft. We’re “exercising” here – remember? Be patient. We didn’t put on this “flab” overnight . . . and we won’t shed it overnight either. It takes time to tone up our muscles . . . in this case, the creative side of our brain.
We’ll begin slow and work up to a higher intensity. Each day, I’ll post a new writing assignment. These will be short and focused. Some may excite you; others may not. Make up your own assignment (or hey, write on your real project!). Just write.
If you want to share your enthusiasm and your successes with the rest of us, feel free to post your comments and let the rest of us know how you’re doing (you’ll have to sign up as a member of my blog to do this – and there’s always an option to opt-out if you later decide to disengage).
I guarantee you this: If you workout with me for the next 21 days . . .
· You WILL be in better shape as a writer. Your writing will flow more easily and you’ll find you have more confidence as a writer.
· You WILL have some “nuggets” that emerge from this process. Once you learn how to allow your Creative Self to come out and play, there might just be a few “keepers” that could turn into real projects or parts of projects.
· You WILL have fun (I can say this, because, if you’re not having fun, you won’t stick with me on this program for 21 days!)
So, come on, sign up and join us. Let’s have some fun while we’re exercising that brain of ours. If you register as a member of my blog, you’ll be notified as soon as I post each assignment. I hate spam as much as you do – so no worries . . . the only emails you’ll get from me during this Writer’s Gym Workout will be the blog notifications.
Here are some tips to guide you toward successful writing.
And here’s the circuit we’ll follow during the month of November:
MONDAY – this is the “clinic” day – working on the basics such as grammar and editing
TUESDAY – this is our day to stretch and grow – experience different types of writing
WEDNESDAY – our day for self-discovery and celebrating our creativity
THURSDAY – business planning – query letters, organization techniques
FRIDAY – Just for Fun – it’s the end of the week. Let’s just write for fun!
Happy Writing!
