How Can You Help Others in Your Community?

I am privileged to be on the Education Committee of a local chapter of the American Business Women’s Association. Nationally, this organization supports women of diverse backgrounds to help them grow professionally and personally. Over the years, we have collectively raised millions of dollars for scholarshp funds to help qualified individuals continue their education. Last year, our local chapter, the Emerald Coast Chapter, was fortunate to be able to grant $16,000 in scholarshps to local students.

There is so much energy in these young adults. They have wonderful visions of their future and high expectations of themselves. I am in awe of the many accomplishments they have already achieved in such a short time. It is so uplifting to see such great potential in our youth and to know they will emerge as highly productive and conscientious adults to lead us into the future.

And it’s not always the graduating high school seniors who apply for our scholarships; many times we reach a young mother who has decided to return to school and finish a degree or begin one. Sometimes it’s helping the student who has one semester left to obtain a master’s degree. In every case, their stories are heart-warming and often tear-filled as we learn of the many obstacles they have had to overcome. And yet they are courageous and willing to show a leap of faith and take those steps to bring success into their lives.

Sometimes, another person simply needs a helping hand from another human being. And that help can come in many different forms. You and I, as “seasoned” (let’s not use that word ‘old’!) adults have much to offer others. Where can you put your talents to work and help another? How can you contribute to their sense of well being? Often, just having someone to sit there and listen . . . to be quiet, and to not judge, is a priceless gift to a person who struggles with decisions.

We hear so much negativity in the news and yet there are such wonderful stories of success out there. The majority of our youth today are serious about their future, they care about the welfare of their families, and they want to make their mark in this world.

One of my neighbors is going to be 89 this week. He still teaches for the seniors at one of the life-long learning centers at a local campus. And in his spare time, he fixes up old computers and donates them to a family who otherwise could not afford one.

What are the great stories in your community? Reach out. Your effort will have long-reaching results – for each of you.

Have a Golden Day!

Coach Darlene
