Boomers are Pursuing 'The Dream'
Are you one of the 77 million people who fit into the category of “The Baby Boomers?” If so, you’re in good company.
Technically, the Boomer label fits those who were born between 1946-1964. If you want to do the math, that’s anyone whose age is between 42 and 60 as of this writing (and I gleefully count myself in this group).
Currently, we make up about 50% of the working population. We’re a diverse group, spanning 18 years of difference in our ages. Some already have grandchildren and are ready to retire; others may still have children in middle school.
That means many of us – from this point forward and for the next 2 decades — are facing our first – and sometimes second – retirement. And in some cases, many of us are looking forward to yet a third job or career! We Boomers are vivacious, energetic souls who still have much to contribute. We love to be engaged in all that surrounds us.
The fun part is that we have so many fabulous choices and opportunities ahead of us. We can continue to share our expertise in those areas in which we have worked for the past 20+ years. Or as many are doing, we are transitioning into entirely different careers. We have freedoms today never before seen by previous generations.
Now is our chance to live “The Dream.”
If you’re at that crossroads and have been working in a job that brings you little satisfaction these days, consider these questions:
- Do you know what brings you joy and contentment in your life?
- Can you find a way to incorporate those elements into your current job? Or can you begin to visualize yourself in a new role elsewhere and slowly start working toward that vision?
- Have you considered working a part-time job in your area of passion – sort of like a “try-it before you buy it” – concept? (The bonus is that this gives you some practical skills too!)
It’s never too early to start thinking about your next “makeover.” Begin today to develop a written plan of how you will get there and when. The results that come from this exercise may surprise you! And then again, the results may be no great surprise at all!
Have a Golden Week!
